People who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism following their initial meeting with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any priest who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," Hickey stated.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the position in spring, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic meeting on child abuse within the Church and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist shared they were victimized by a priest who was later transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey stated. "We have the common objective, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Significant Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 nations, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their personal experience and appeared "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is advocating that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent church-ordered report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also noted that survivors repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they informed the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a relationship and continuing to strengthen that bond is a step in the correct path," Hickey commented.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story ends - he appreciated that."
