Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
