In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
