Greek Police Strengthen Security After Demonstrations Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Hellenic officials have significantly increased safety arrangements at multiple major harbors in an initiative to prevent protesters from approaching a cruise liner carrying visitors from Israel on an 11-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Protests Prompt Enhanced Protection

The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo came after earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata recently. Previously, passengers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after community members held rallies on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the truce, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," remarked an educator who participated in the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, non-combatant individuals are being fatally injured."

Tourist Experience and Popular Sentiment

From higher vantage points, passengers observed as demonstrators in Kalamata chanted: "You require the authorities, you're not wanted in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who spent the summer organizing peace demonstrations throughout Greece, asserted: "Those Israelis who support the policies of their government aren't embraced here."

International Context and Diplomatic Ties

Constantine Filis noted: "Because of regional nearness and our historical connections with the Middle East, the typical Hellenic citizen is more sensitive to what is occurring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"Greece is in a challenging situation," he continued. "Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for the majority of European countries."

Commercial and Tourism Consequences

Government statistics show that in excess of 600,000 tourists from Israel visited Greece in 2024, with forecasts of greater tourism this year. This significant arrival underscores the significantly enhanced ties between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek administrations maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Alliance and Regional Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel constitutes not only a significant counterbalance to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also provides the additional advantage of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"Greece is not going to risk its relations with Israel," remarked the expert. "However from a humanitarian perspective we must be more accepting, more equitable, more determined to show the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and International Response

The scale of the Greek protest movement has surprised Israeli authorities. In recent months, the nation's diplomatic department warned visitors to keep discreet, while domestic press described Athens as a "paradise lost" due to anti-Israeli graffiti emerging on edifices in the city center.

Victor Eliezer of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece expressed concern: "Certainly we're concerned. The sort of rhetoric we're hearing can quickly turn into prejudiced."

Upcoming Developments and Demands

Increasingly, protesters have focused on Athens' close ties with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to demand the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO establishment that after the commencement of war in Gaza has functioned as a key refuelling post for US aircraft carriers, fighter planes and ships headed to Israel.

"There have been victories," announced Petros Constantinou. "Our central requirement, currently, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
