Area Law Enforcement
Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
